Luckily, most types of light bulbs are recyclable. However, different types of lightbulbs will have different steps in recycling.

  • LED light bulbs: Your curbside pickup recycling program will most likely take your LED light bulbs. Or you can make a visit to stores such as IKEA and Lowe’s, which have in-store recycling bins where you can drop off old LED bulbs.
  • Halogen light bulbs: Halogen light bulbs are harder to recycle, so refer to these mail-in programs to ensure that your light bulbs are properly and safely recycled.
  • CFLs: Compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CFLs, are difficult to recycle and cannot be put into your normal recycling bin. Fortunately, retailers such as Bartell Drugs, Lowe’s, and Home Depot accept CFLs for recycling.
  • Incandescent light bulbs: Incandescent light bulbs are fairly rare today. Because of the levels of metal and glass, they are extremely difficult to be recycled, so the best option is to throw these into the garbage can. Do NOT throw these into the recycling, as it can render all other recyclable glass that are grouped with the incandescent light bulb unrecyclable. Make sure to wrap your light bulb, for example, with like a polythene bag to ensure sanitation workers aren’t injured by broken glass.
Not recycling light bulbs can be quite harmful for the environment, as they can seep harmful chemicals into the soil under the landfill. Let's recycle each type of lightbulb in the right way, so it doesn't end up in landfill and hurt the environment!
